Over 10 trillion microbes inhabit the gut. What can they say about one’s health?
The gut microbiome is a total of all microbiobes that reside in the gastrointestinal tract. These microbes are bacteria bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc.
The primary function of the gut is digestion and absorption of food but research has shown that it also plays a role in the maintenance of the immune system, brain development, behaviour, and even production of vitamins.
Each of these microbiomes has a unique DNA sequence that serves as an identification mark distinguishing them from other species.
Using sequencing techniques, these microbes can be identified by their characteristic DNA signature.
The interaction between the microbes and the host can then be studied
The microbes partake in metabolic activities as a part of their routine physiological processes. These metabolic activities could be beneficial or detrimental to the host and detrimental metabolic activities can result in disease.
Dysbiosis is a state of imbalance that gives rise to disease as a result of irregularities in the metabolic processes of the microbes.
